In December 2022, along with other brands such as the Xiaomi 13 Pro and the Xiaomi 13 Lite, the Xiaomi 13 was the flagship smartphone launched by the Xiaomi company. The device succeeds Xiaomi 12 and tries to rival the iPhone 14 and Samsung Galaxy S23. However, will it be able to separate itself well from the highly competitive realm of the upscale world? Let’s find out.
Design and display
The Xiaomi 13 has a sleek and elegant design that resembles the iPhone, with a flat-edged metal frame and a glass or leather back. It comes in three colors: black, white, and flora green. The black and white variants have a glass back, while the flora green variant has a leather back. The phone measures 160.8 x 75.6 x 8.1 mm and weighs 185 g (189 g for the leather version). It has an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, and a Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection for the front.
The phone features a 6.36-inch OLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, a 20:9 aspect ratio, and a 120 Hz refresh rate. It supports HDR10+ and has a peak brightness of 1000 nits. The display is sharp, vibrant, and smooth, and it has a punch-hole cutout for the selfie camera on the top left corner. The display also has an in-screen fingerprint scanner and a 360 Hz touch sampling rate.
Performance and battery
The Xiaomi 13 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which is a 4 nm octa-core processor with a clock speed of up to 2.84 GHz. It is paired with 8 GB or 12 GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 128 GB, 256 GB, or 512 GB of UFS 3.1 or UFS 4.0 storage. The phone runs on Android 13 with MIUI 14 skin on top. The phone has a 4642 mm² VC vapor chamber and an X-axis linear motor to keep the device cool and provide haptic feedback.
The phone has a 4500 mAh battery that supports 67 W wired charging, 50 W wireless charging, and 10 W reverse wireless charging. The phone can be fully charged in about 30 minutes with the wired charger, and in about 40 minutes with the wireless charger. The battery life is decent, but not exceptional, as the phone can last for a day of moderate use, but may need a top-up for heavy use.
Camera and audio
The Xiaomi 13 has a Leica-branded triple camera setup on the back, consisting of a 50 MP f/1.8 main camera with a Sony IMX800 sensor and optical image stabilization (OIS), a 10 MP f/2.0 telephoto camera with 3.2x optical zoom and OIS, and a 12 MP f/2.2 ultra-wide camera with a 120-degree field of view. The phone can record 8K videos at 30 fps, 4K videos at 60 fps, and 1080p videos at 960 fps. The phone also has a 32 MP f/2.0 selfie camera on the front.
The camera performance of the Xiaomi 13 is impressive, as it can capture detailed, colorful, and well-exposed photos in various lighting conditions. The phone also has two shooting modes: Vibrant and Authentic, which are designed by Leica to offer different color profiles and effects. The Vibrant mode enhances the saturation and contrast, while the Authentic mode preserves the natural colors and tones. The zoom and ultra-wide cameras are also good, but not as great as the main camera. The low-light performance is decent, but not outstanding, as the phone can produce some noise and loss of detail in dark scenes.
The phone has a stereo speaker system with Harman Kardon tuning, which delivers loud, clear, and balanced sound. The phone also has a 3.5 mm headphone jack, which is rare for a flagship phone nowadays. The phone supports Dolby Atmos, Hi-Res Audio, and aptX HD for enhanced audio quality.
Price in India, USA, UK, China, Canada, Nigeria
The Xiaomi 13 is a solid flagship phone that offers a premium design, a stunning display, a powerful performance, a versatile camera, and a fast-charging battery. It is a worthy competitor to the Samsung Galaxy S23 and the iPhone 14, and it may even have some advantages over them, such as the headphone jack, the Leica partnership, and the storage options. However, the phone also has some drawbacks, such as the mediocre battery life, the average low-light camera performance, and the lack of availability in some markets.
The Xiaomi 13 is priced at 711.66 GBP in the UK, 999 EUR in Europe, and 663.14 USD in the US. However, the phone is not officially available in the US, and it can only be purchased from third-party sellers. The phone is also not available in India, Canada, and Nigeria, as of now. The phone is available in China, where it costs 3,999 CNY for the 8 GB + 128 GB variant, 4,299 CNY for the 8 GB + 256 GB variant, 4,699 CNY for the 12 GB + 256 GB variant, and 5,299 CNY for the 12 GB + 512 GB variant.
