In Order to Fix Your iPhone at Home, Apple is Willing to Sell You the Parts You Need

iPhones and Macs will soon be able to be fixed by the user. The company intends to begin selling parts and tools and providing instructions on how to repair Apple products at home, rather than bringing them to a store or a third-party repair shop. Starting with the iPhone 12 and 13 and then moving on to Macs with M1 chips, Apple has a plan. In the beginning, you’ll only be able to replace the iPhone’s display, battery, and camera with parts made by Apple.

This is a major shift from Apple, which has long been opposed to the right-to-repair movement and to any repairs taking place outside of its own stores. Even this week, Apple was reversing software that prevented Face ID from working if customers installed their own screens on their devices.

Starting in the United States, the program will be referred to as “Self Service Repair,” and it will be rolled out worldwide “early next year.” Individual technicians with knowledge and experience in electronic device repair” are the only ones who can benefit from this new program, according to a statement from the company. Apple, on the other hand, is now providing an option for those customers who are confident in repairing their own devices. According to TechCrunch, making these repairs yourself won’t void a device’s warranty, but if you damage your device in the process, you’ll have to pay for the repairs.
